Norwich track and field repeat as STAC division champs

CONKLIN – The Norwich boys and girls teams completed their regular season dual meet schedule Tuesday evening against the Susquehanna Valley Sabers with a victory for both.
The win gives Norwich’s girls and boys the divisional championship again, making it four straight for the Tornado boys and six in a row for the Lady Purple Tornado.
“Our group of seniors have never lost a dual meet and will be going out champions once again,” said head coach Shaun Horan.
The Lady Tornado captured the win with a final score of 103-26 while the Norwich boys earned their victory 97-35.
Norwich lost just one event in the girls meet, falling in the shot put by less than a foot as Susquehanna Valley’s thrower Root tossed a distance of 27 feet-2.5 inches. The Tornado’s Emily Evans had a best throw attempt of three for 26 feet-3.5 inches for second place in the meet.
All other events were won by Norwich’s athletes as Katie Gawronski won the 100 and 400 meter hurdles, Lucie Martin took first in the 800 meter event along with the long jump, Angela Carlson came away with victories in both the triple jump and high jump and Miranda Cole sprinted her way to the finish line in both the 100 and 200 meter to pick up two wins for the Tornado.
Martin and Gawronski joined Nicole Jeffrey and Hailey Colabelli to win the 4x400 meter relay event with a time of 4:57, a race in which the foursome has not lost in a dual meet all season. Martin, Gawronski and Jeffery added Adrienne Vedder for the 4x800 meter race to also capture a first placed finish. The group ran in the event in 13:03.
Colabelli ran in the 4x100 winning relay team for Norwich, taking a leg of the race. Carlson, Riley Marsh and Cole combined their splits for a time of 51.7 seconds, giving the Tornado a relay sweep in the meet.
Individually, Colabelli added another win for Norwich in the 400 meter race as she finished the event a full four seconds ahead of the second place runner.
Jada Reynolds ran a 13:49 time in the 3000 meter race, crossing the finish line first in the event and Shakira Alexander captured first in the discus throw, sending the discus 85 feet for the win.
In the boys meet, the Sabers came away with three event wins – the 110 meter hurdles, the long jump and high jump – but the remaining events ended with Norwich victories.
Eric Conant ran an 11.1 in the 100 and a 23.2 in the 200, ending his season with a perfect season in the two events for dual meets. Conant was also a member of the winning 4x400 and 4x100 relay teams.
In the 4x100, Conant ran with Jaden Jenkins, Griffin Mills and Nik Barber for a one lap time of 44.8 seconds. Barber and Conant joined Gabe Gawronski and Noah Buffalini for winning time for 4:00.
Buffalini ran in the 4x800 with teammates Julian Roque, Makio Sutton ad Nolan Reid and the foursome helped sweep the relays for the boys meet with a time of 11:37.4.
Roque and Sutton each captured a win in the individual distance races as Roque won the 1600 meter event in 4:52. Sutton won the race that is double the distance and finished it at 11:26.
Gabe Gawronski took first in the 400 meter event, running a time of 56.4 seconds – 3.1 seconds faster than the next runner to complete the race. He also won the 800 meter, running a time of 2:20.8.
Zach Lowe continued his winning ways in the throwing events, throwing a distance of 44 feet-4 inches in the shot put and a distance of 120 feet-8.5 inches in the discus.
Eli Craddock won the triple jump, landing in the pit 39 feet-9.75 inches while Nik Barber captured the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 1:07, beating out teammate Buffalini by half a second.
Norwich heads to the Yellowjacket Invitational Friday afternoon. The meet of 11 teams is scheduled to begin events at 4 p.m.
